AOS Completes Successful Two-Way VDES Communications via Maritime Satellite Ymir-1

In a significant leap for maritime communication, the AOS collaborative between AAC Clyde Space (OTCQX: ACCMF), Saab, and ORBCOMM has successfully demonstrated two-way VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) communications through its satellite, Ymir-1. Launched on November 11, 2023, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, Ymir-1 is poised to enhance global maritime connectivity and safety, marking a pivotal step towards the vision of “Connecting Everything Maritime.”

Unlike its predecessor, the Automatic Identification System (AIS), which primarily allows vessels to receive information, VDES enables bidirectional communication. This advancement permits ships to send and receive data and messages not only to each other but also to shore stations. Such functionality is crucial for enhancing situational awareness and operational efficiency in maritime operations.

The Ymir-1 satellite is equipped with Saab TransponderTech’s advanced R6 VDES payload transponder. This technology facilitates real-time data exchange, significantly increasing bandwidth, up to 32 times more than AIS. This enhanced capacity supports a wider range of applications including maritime surveillance, encrypted communications, logistics management, and search and rescue operations.

The integration of VDES into maritime operations is expected to improve safety at sea while also contributing to environmental sustainability. By providing better communication capabilities, Ymir-1 enhances navigation safety and operational efficiency for ship operators. As AAC Clyde Space CEO Luis Gomes noted, “Ymir-1 represents a significant milestone for the worldwide maritime community, offering improved navigation and communications.”

Furthermore, the project aligns with broader goals of reducing the environmental impact of shipping. Enhanced communication capabilities can lead to more efficient routing and fuel usage, thereby supporting greener shipping practices.

Ymir-1 is part of a collaborative project involving AAC Clyde Space, Saab, and ORBCOMM. This partnership aims to develop a next-generation space-based VDES system that extends the reach of maritime communications beyond coastal areas into open ocean territories. The project has garnered support from the Swedish Transport Administration, highlighting its importance in advancing maritime infrastructure.

ORBCOMM will play a crucial role in integrating the data collected by Ymir-1 into its distribution center for maritime navigation and communication services. This integration is essential for deploying effective communication solutions across the global maritime industry.

The successful launch and operation of Ymir-1 set the stage for future advancements in satellite-based maritime communication systems. The ongoing development of a constellation of satellites will further enhance global coverage and reliability in maritime communication.

As the industry moves towards more interconnected systems, the implications for ship operators are profound. The ability to communicate effectively in remote areas can lead to improved safety protocols and operational efficiencies that were previously unattainable. The successful deployment of Ymir-1 not only represents a technological achievement but also underscores the collaborative efforts necessary to improve global maritime communications.
