In a strategic move aimed at fortifying its dominant position in the burgeoning smart speaker market, Amazon is recruiting former Microsoft Corp product chief, Panos Panay, to spearhead the division overseeing Alexa and the Echo line of smart speakers, according to sources familiar with the matter.
Panay, a pivotal figure in Microsoft’s hardware endeavors, notably driving the success of its Surface computers, recently announced his departure from the software giant. His appointment will mark a significant addition to Amazon’s leadership roster, as the e-commerce behemoth seeks to navigate the competitive landscape of smart home technology.
The shift in leadership comes as Amazon’s current hardware chief, Dave Limp, gears up for retirement by year-end. Limp has played an instrumental role in shaping Amazon’s hardware division, which encompasses an array of products including Fire-branded television streaming sticks, tablets, and the Kindle e-reader. This division underwent a restructuring last year, marked by a round of layoffs, as the company realigned its strategies in response to a slower growth trajectory and phased out certain projects.
The annual unveiling of new devices is slated for Wednesday at Amazon’s burgeoning campus in Arlington, Virginia, where industry insiders anticipate a glimpse of the company’s latest innovations under Panay’s guidance.
Amazon’s move to enlist Panay is seen as a pivotal step in safeguarding its supremacy in the rapidly expanding smart speaker market. Presently, the company commands a lion’s share, with Echo devices estimated to account for over half of all smart speakers in circulation. The tech giant has consistently refined its product offerings, with its most recent foray into the 4K Smart TV market via the launch of the new Fire TV Cube.
Both Microsoft and Amazon remained tight-lipped on the appointment of Panos Panay, declining to provide official comments.
