Tungsten might not be a household name, but it plays a vital role in modern industry. This dense, hard metal has the highest melting point of all elements at around 3,422 degrees Celsius, making it indispensable for applications that demand extreme durability and heat resistance. The metal is critical to defense systems, aerospace alloys, automotive manufacturing, electronics production, and energy infrastructure.
The strategic importance of tungsten comes with a significant supply chain vulnerability. China, Russia, and North Korea together account for approximately 87% of global tungsten supply and reserves, creating a concentration risk for Western economies. The United States and European Union have both designated tungsten as a critical raw material precisely because of its irreplaceable role in national security and advanced manufacturing. With no major active tungsten mines currently operating in the U.S., secure western sources have become a national security priority.
Against this backdrop, Allied Critical Metals Inc. (OTCQB: ACMIF, CSE: ACM, FSE: 0VJ0) is advancing two tungsten projects in northern Portugal that could help fill the gap for Western supply chains. The Canadian-based mining company is focused on its Borralha and Vila Verde tungsten projects, and recent developments suggest the company is moving from exploration toward actual production.
Allied announced today that it has secured a transformational $40 million financing and off-take package, bringing total cash liquidity to over U.S.$45 million. This financing fully funds the company through the end of 2027, which is a significant milestone for a small-cap mining company operating in the development phase. The off-take agreement includes a floor price of U.S.$1,000 per metric tonne unit for calendar year 2026, providing revenue visibility.
The financing arrangement includes flexibility for governmental agencies, including those associated with the United States Department of War and the Portuguese defense sector, to purchase tungsten concentrates from the company. IdD Portugal Defense has already recognized the project as strategically important for Portugal, Europe, and NATO supply chains. This alignment with defense sector needs reflects the broader strategic context surrounding tungsten development in western jurisdictions.
Operational progress is accompanying the financing milestone. Allied reported that drilling at the Borralha Project has intersected over 200 metres with multiple intercepts of visible tungsten mineralization at a newly defined Venise Breccia target. CEO Roy Bonnell described these as preliminary results from an ongoing 20,000 metre drilling campaign, with first assay results expected in the first week of June 2026. Five drilling rigs are currently mobilized, with a sixth expected to join this week, enabling completion of the campaign by the end of July 2026.
First tungsten concentrate production from the Vila Verde Pilot Plant is targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and timely receipt of long-lead equipment items. The company has initiated preparations for procuring critical equipment including crushers, rod mills, and gravity concentration systems, with delivery targeted for late 2026.
Insiders have also put their money where their mouth is. Certain officers, directors, and consultants, led by CEO Roy Bonnell, acquired 222,500 common shares on the open market, increasing management ownership to approximately 14% of the company. This insider buying reflects confidence in the company’s execution plan and strategic positioning.
The company is also pursuing listing upgrades that could broaden investor access. Allied has applied to list its common shares on the TSX Venture Exchange as a Tier 1 mining issuer, with the listing expected within approximately four weeks if approved. Upon completion of the TSX-V listing, the company intends to file a registration statement on Form F-10 with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for a proposed listing on the Nasdaq Stock Market. This longer-term capital markets strategy aims to strengthen liquidity and broaden the shareholder base.
For small-cap investors, the combination of secured financing, operational progress, insider buying, and strategic critical minerals positioning creates multiple catalysts. The upcoming drill results and listing ambitions add near-term momentum to the story. Allied Critical Metals represents one of several small-cap explorers reviving historic tungsten assets in tier-one jurisdictions, betting that geography matters as much as grade in a market where western supply is scarce.
