Cummins, Daimler, PACCAR Join Forces for U.S. Battery Venture

Accelera, a zero-emissions subsidiary of Cummins, along with Daimler Trucks & Buses US Holding and PACCAR, announced on Wednesday the establishment of a groundbreaking joint venture aimed at propelling battery cell manufacturing within the United States. Under this strategic partnership, the three companies will share ownership, with Daimler Truck, Accelera, and PACCAR each holding a substantial 30 percent stake, while their technology partner, EVE Energy, will possess a 10 percent share. The implementation of this agreement is contingent upon customary closing conditions and obtaining regulatory approvals, which are expected in due course.

 

This ambitious endeavor is poised to usher in an era of transformative growth, with a projected investment ranging between two to three billion dollars. The primary goal of this massive investment is to construct a state-of-the-art factory capable of producing an astounding 21 gigawatt hours (GWh) of lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery cells. Martin Daum, the CEO of Daimler Truck, expressed his optimism about the potential of this venture, stating, “This planned joint venture enables economies of scale beyond Daimler Truck.” The utilization of LFP battery cells, although previously typecast in the United States, has been overshadowed by the global dominance of Chinese companies such as BYD and CATL in battery production. In response, several companies have recently expressed their intent to establish manufacturing facilities within the United States, capitalizing on federal subsidies and positioning themselves at the forefront of the EV revolution.
