Martinsville ISD now proudly stands as the inaugural school district in Texas to boast an entirely electric school bus fleet, according to the Texas Electric School Bus Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to monitoring the electrification of school transportation within the state. The Blue Bird Vision electric buses offer emission-free transport, accommodating up to 71 students for distances of up to 120 miles on a single charge. Thanks to Nuvve’s state-of-the-art battery charging infrastructure, these buses require only a fraction of the day to achieve a full recharge.
Principal Keith Kimbrough of Martinsville ISD expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We may be a small district, but we take immense pride in leading the way towards sustainable and clean commuting for Texas schoolchildren. Having previously worked in the construction industry, my belief in clean transportation and wind power for communities like ours has only grown stronger through our close collaboration with Nuvve, Blue Bird, and Rush Truck Centers. Managing the entire conversion process from diesel to electric has been a source of great pride, and we are confident that other districts will take note of our efforts. We are more than willing to share our approach and, in due course, the results we achieve.”
Kimbrough, in a strategic move, secured a $1.58 million Clean School Bus grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in October 2022, providing critical support for the project. Collaborating with Rush Truck Centers as the dealer, Blue Bird for the fleet, and Nuvve Holding K-12 for consultation and the provision of appropriate chargers and software tailored to the district’s routes and daily charging requirements.
Nuvve CEO Gregory Poilasne commended the efforts of the Nuvve K-12 team and partners, emphasizing their advisory role and unwavering support for Martinsville Independent School District in this transformative journey. This milestone installation marks Nuvve’s inaugural venture in the state of Texas, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.
Blue Bird, an esteemed institution with a century-long legacy in school bus manufacturing, is playing a pivotal role in aiding school districts across Texas and North America in the rapid adoption of their electric, zero-emission school buses.
Blue Bird President Britton Smith expressed his satisfaction in joining forces with Nuvve and local dealer Rush to facilitate Martinsville ISD’s transition towards clean student transportation. Smith underscored Blue Bird’s dominant position as the industry leader with over 1,500 electric vehicles on the road, affirming the company’s commitment to advancing innovation and sustainability in Texas. The partnership with Nuvve and the exemplary model set by Martinsville promises to inspire other districts to embark on similar journeys towards greener, more sustainable transportation solutions.
