Tesla (TSLA.O) halted some production lines in Texas and Nevada due to a global IT outage, Business Insider reported on Friday, citing sources familiar with the matter. According to an internal email reviewed by Reuters, Tesla informed its staff on Friday morning that they were “currently experiencing an outage with Windows hosts, servers, laptops, and manufacturing devices where users are seeing a blue screen on their devices.”
The tech outage, which disrupted industries from travel to finance, began to resolve after several hours. The disruption was traced back to a content update by CrowdStrike (CRWD.O) for Microsoft Windows hosts.
In a social media post, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated, “We just deleted CrowdStrike from all our systems, so no rollouts at all,” without specifying which of his companies had taken action or detailing the impact of the outage. Musk also commented, “This gave a seizure to the automotive supply chain,” in response to a post by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella about the outage.
The Business Insider report noted that the automaker sent some production employees home early during the night shift at its Austin, Texas, and Sparks, Nevada facilities. CrowdStrike announced that it was working with customers affected by a defect found “in a single content update for Windows hosts.”
