Heliogen Advances Solar Technology with Capella Project Completion

Heliogen Inc. (OTCQX: HLGN), a prominent player in concentrating solar energy technology, has recently wrapped up its innovative Capella project, marking a key moment in the development of next-generation concentrated solar power (CSP). This project, which was jointly funded by Woodside Energy (USA) Inc. and the U.S. Department of Energy, aimed to demonstrate the commercial viability of Heliogen’s Generation 3 (Gen 3) CSP technology.

The Capella project focused on creating a 5-megawatt concentrated solar power plant, incorporating groundbreaking technological innovations. Although the project has concluded after the front-end engineering and design phase due to rising costs, it achieved several important milestones that could pave the way for future advancements in solar technology.

One of the most notable accomplishments is the successful completion of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and a Class 2 cost estimate for a commercial-scale CSP plant, marking a groundbreaking achievement in this industry. Additionally, the Centrec particle receiver has progressed from research and development to prototype scale, demonstrating innovative design improvements and effective heated particle flow.

Collaboration with supply chain partners has also played a crucial role in the project’s success. Heliogen has joined forces with industry leaders to enhance supporting technologies, including advancements in supercritical COâ‚‚ turbine technology and novel particle heat exchanger designs. Furthermore, the project has developed specialized performance and cost modeling tools tailored for Generation 3 particle systems. On the regulatory front, significant permitting progress has been made, with key site approvals secured, including authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration, which lays a solid foundation for future projects.

Christie Obiaya, CEO of Heliogen, emphasized the project’s significance, stating that “the Capella project achieved several first-ever milestones in prototyping and design,” which are crucial for enhancing the techno-economics of Gen 3 CSP technology. She expressed gratitude for Woodside’s collaboration, noting that both companies are exploring further opportunities to deploy CSP technology effectively.

The Gen 3 CSP technology aims to generate higher temperatures than traditional CSP systems. While Gen 2 CSP is already established and operational globally, providing dispatchable thermal energy at reduced costs, Gen 3 seeks to push these boundaries further. Heliogen’s focus now shifts toward meeting the increasing demand for reliable low-carbon energy solutions, particularly driven by sectors such as data centers.

Jason Crusan, Vice President of Energy Solutions at Woodside Energy, acknowledged the collaborative efforts in advancing the Capella project. He stated that significant progress was made across various key work scopes, highlighting Heliogen’s technical expertise and innovation throughout the endeavor.
